Drum recording techniques

I try to share knowledge about the drum recording techniques in the studio or your own home .... Actually really easy if we really understand the correct placement of the mic and also setting each channel mixer already be set in such a way to produce a good recording .. . now I will start to try to post below ...

Kick , Snare , Floor Tom and generally have 2 skins ( top & bottom )

1 . Batter head skin ( above ) : effect on the " attack " and the initial pitch
2 . Resonant head skin ( below ) : effect on "overall pitch " and sustain.

Each drum kit ( Kick , Snare , and Toms ) has the size and material of different materials , and the meaning of each size and material has a resonant tone sounds different too . There are some that have Snare resonant sound with a wide badwidth , meaning Snare can ditune from low pitch to high pitch and still produce a perfect tone . Snare tunnning should fit the basic tone of the song , and tunning floor tom and follow the tone interval.

Recording Kick

Bass guitar and kick drum is what is keeping the groove track , and Kick drum rhythm section is the center of your song . For the record kick , you can use a microphone like the Sennheiser E602 , SM57 , AKG D112 , Neumann KM184 or R92 ( ribbon microphone ) so it's up to your taste and budget you have to buy the microphone . Begin placing the microphone on the kick drum and listen . How sound is produced? If boomy ( too low and not clear ) , place the microphone closer to the sound of the beater for clarity , if the sound generated is too tight , then slide it back up to get the sound as desired . Do a trial experiment to position the mic , and there is no right or wrong way to do it .
Use 2 microphones ( inside & outside ) . Microphone placed inside to get the " attack " of the batter well . Microphone placed on the outside to get sub- low sound .
But for uses 2 microphones note also about Phase ( the correlation between the two microphone ) . When getting a position that feels good ( In - PHASE ) , trying to do check PHASE , by inverting the phase of one microphone . If sound so weird / weak / low - ilang his ( Out -of - Phase ) , mean position behind the mic before the phase is correct .

Recording Snare

Get a good snare drum sound is very easy if the snare is a good sound , tune , and the song fit the character played by a good drummer . For the record you can make use of Snare Shure Beta 57A microphone , Beyerdynamic M201 , and others. You can use two microphones to record the snare , one placed above and below one another .
Use 3 mic ( 2 above and 1 below ) . For 1 mic over to get the " attack " and " snappy " and 1 mic again to get the " Body " . The second mic we tie with duct tape in the same position and put under hihat with a slope overlooking the center 45derajat Snare ( as opposed to hi - hat ) to minimize spil / leaked from a hi - hat .
As for the bottom snare you can use a dynamic microphone that recorded suararattle less sharp and more natural than using a condenser microphone . And do not forget to snare reversed phase under arrest because the opposite direction with the microphones on top .

Recording Toms

In most drum kit , you will find various amounts set tom , all of the different tonal range , usually the drummer will have a high tonal tom , midle , and tom lowh . Sometimes you will find a more diverse drummer who utilize some toms all tuned differently . But in the recording studio is usually sufficient to use 2 toms and 1 floor only. Microphone used is not much different from the snare microphone .
You can also use the 2 for 1 tom microphones , one microphone but also has enough
Position the microphone 45 degrees medial skin

Recording Hi - Hat & Ride

You can not put a microphone on the Hi - Hat or Ride , and the sound recorded via an overhead . But you should use channel itself or fixed individually recorded for Hi - Hat and Ride ( separate with overhead ) , it will also facilitate the mixing process . The first thing to record hi - hat is the selection itself hi - hat , hi - hat is very vulnerable recorded voice sounds cheap and very sharp voice like a tin can. Use the hi - hat and a nice percymbalan , whose character is thick and not too sharp .
Use ribbon microphone so transient it can be maintained.
Position the microphone about 20cm above the hi - hat outside. The aim is to reduce the spil / leaks from the snare which was blocked by the hi - hat part .
Microphone height was set so that the overall sound of the hi- hat to get a good recorded .

Recording Overhead

Mic positioning for the overhead is the most important thing to get a good sound overhead , but it will also greatly affect the overall drum sound . The main purpose of the Overhead ? This is to take the whole piece sound instruments ( but more focused on the cymbals ) and to unite all other individual mic sound so all sound as one entity . You can use the microphone AEA r84 , AKG C414  , series and so on .

Recording floor

How to record floor was almost the same as the record tom ..just use one microphone and positioned 45 degrees medial skin...and microphone used is not different from the snare ..

Initial placement begins by following basic techniques ? 3 - to- 1 Rule ? , Ie position 2 microphone placement basis where the distance between the mic 1 mic 2 should be 3x of the distance between one mic to the instrument ( drums ) . This formula is made to avoid the problem of phase / comb filter .
Pan microphone mic 1 full 2 full right and left (dead Dead Left and Right )
Check Phase , by reversing the phase of one mic . If the sound is heard to be heavy to the left / right ( out of phase ) , it means that the previous position is correct .
Rooms / acostic good room will greatly affect the overhead track .

Once again, do not just stare with having to use an expensive mic ... not necessarily the result will be good as long as we do not understand about how the placement and arrangement ... Take advantage of existing and use as much as possible ... because we are looking for a home recording can compete with pro studio that is certainly a lot better because it uses quality tools ...

Below I will attach a link that will show the recording in my own home recording studio ..

Good luck with that technique ... I hope I have given useful for you thanks...
